Art & Soul: A Yellow Springs Art Fair

November 15, 2014 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

Art & Soul: A YS Art Fair will be held in Yellow Springs on Saturday, November 15th from 10am-5pm at Mills Lawn Elementary School, 200 S. Walnut St.

This marks the third year of this juried art fair, an intimate show with 30 artists from the region displaying and selling their handmade fine art and fine craft. The show will have a mixture of artists new to the area along with some past participants. More than a third of the artists will be participating in Art & Soul for the first time. The show’s promoter, Lisa Goldberg, also produces the popular Yellow Springs Artist Studio Tour and Sale.

“This seems like a natural follow-up to the Studio Tour, says Goldberg, “and we are honored to have such high quality arts and fine crafts professionals in one place.”

The shows’ name, Art & Soul was chosen because “artists put their souls into the making of their work” says Goldberg. Goldberg is excited about the lineup of artists for the show this year. Art & Soul includes works of ceramic artists, jewelers, glass fusion artists along with glassblowers, bead makers, fiber artists, painters, photographers, and mixed media art in all price ranges.

Karen Hammond, John Boyett, Theresa Mayer, Jim Delange and Sara Gray all work in glass. Hammond, a Yellow Springs native, does both glass fusion and makes images on glass using layers of glass powders that create spectacular “paintings” in and on her glass.

Kate and Dave Chesar of Oakwood make beautiful pottery decorated with fine slip work or carvings. They will be joined by ceramic artist Kate Lally and her decorative ceramic plaques, tiles, and ornaments. Others working in clay include Geno Luketic, Jancy Janslow, Susan Finster, Courtney DeYoung (jewelery) and Kristy Jo Beber of Indiana. Some of the ceramic artists are hand-builders, while others create their pots on a potter’s wheel.

Jewelers abound this year with Ben Jordan and his etched patterns on various metals; Janet R. Webb’s handcrafted sterling silver jewelry using some torch-fired enamel which adds color to her pieces; BJ & Greg Jordan use sterling silver, copper and brass adorned by stones, polymers and found objects; Cathie Streator creates whimsical designs on earrings and pins; Yuki Hall, Rose Lawson and Alice Young-Basora, work with handmade and purchased beads.

Upwear Urban Art Clothing, new to the show this year, uses upcycled, reclaimed and repurposed fabrics, designing, cutting and piecing all the clothing by hand. Award winning Pam Geisel and Kim Gillie Krier specialize in modern art quilts. Both have a large repertoire of items including bags, journal covers and wine glass coasters. Lucy Chapman uses natural fibers to create functional pieces.

Yellow Springs High School Junior Lake Miller, a newcomer to the show, had been creating and selling his photographs for over 10 years at art fairs and festivals. He tries to capture everyday scenes in a beautiful and truly unique way, one that captures the landscape and the viewer. Mixed media artists Patricia and Jon Hecker of Tattoo Dreams in Bloomington Indiana create hand built boxes embellished with iconic images of modern culture. Lisa Vetter and Paul Siefert of The Art Farm use found objects to make their functional assemblages; Barbara Zilz and Michelle Litell create things from paper while Edith Wadkins is a painter focusing on acrylics and Les Thede crafts furniture and furnishings made from maple, cherry, oak and ash.

Mills Lawn School is located adjacent to the downtown shopping district. Art & Soul marks a kick off to “Holiday in the Springs” While you are in the village look for unique shops and restaurants and public and gallery art.

Art & Soul provides an excellent opportunity to buy handcrafted work directly from the maker – be it a gift for the holidays or a little something for the buyer. There is an entry fee of $3, a portion of which will be donated to the a scholarship fund for graduating high school students continuing their education in the arts and the Yellow Springs Police Coat Fund. Children under 6 are admitted for free.

Greene Medical Foundation has also pledged to make a large annual contribution, through Art & Soul, to the Yellow Springs Police Coat fund and the Yellow Springs schools stating that “Helping people take care of the physical and educational needs of the community, as well as their heath care needs, fits directly into their mission to improve the quality of life of communities we serve.”
