Thursday, January 15th at 7pm
For your viewing pleasure, Not-So-Silent-Cinema presents classic short comedies by two of the greatest actor-directors of the silent-film era, Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin. Keaton, perhaps one of the greatest stunt actors of all time, combined mesmerizing physical prowess with brilliant gag writing. Perhaps the most iconic film star of all time, Charlie Chaplin pioneered aspects of acting, directing and writing that shaped the course of cinema history. This program features Chaplin’s “Pawnshop” and “The Adventurer” and Keaton’s “Cops” and “One Week.”
In their day these silent films would have been screened with live musical accompaniment, often improvised. Not-So-Silent-Cinema is proud to keep this tradition alive as they perform alongside Keaton and Chaplin with brand-new, original musical scores. The scores follow Keaton and Chaplin through early American landscapes with a parallel soundscape of American roots music combining blues, jazz, ragtime, old-time, Klezmer, and even a little classical music, composed by Brendan Cooney.
Not-So-Silent-Cinema features new scores to classic film with rotating casts of musicians. This show features the New River Ensemble, a genre-stretching chamber music ensemble. New York multi-instrumentalist, Martha Hyde, a native of Yellow Springs, is a veteran of Broadway, Radio City Music Hall and the Gotham Wind Symphony. Cellist Lisa Liske-Doorandish is an in-demand performer and teacher from the hills of southern Virginia. Philadelphia pianist and composer Brendan Cooney is Not-So-Silent-Cinema’s musical director. The ensemble regularly presents chamber music concerts, live film scores and educational workshops.
