A Four Course West African Dinner for AfroMeals
Location: MAZU
The Food Network’s West African recipe developer and an Ohio media expert on Afro-Caribbean cuisine, guest chef Gabi will prepare a vegan feast of West African favorites, sponsored by the BIPOC Food and Farming Network. Proceeds benefit AfroMeals Foundation’s work with Miami Valley Meals. Chef Gabi and AfroMeals Foundation were recently honored for preparing culturally appropriate meals for Haitian and African refugee communities in the region.

Defining American in the Heartland: Jose Antonio Vargas & Dr. William Lopez

Jose Antonio Vargas is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Emmy-nominated filmmaker, and Tony-nominated producer. Founder of Define American and author of Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen. William Lopez is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan School of Public Health and author of Raiding the Heartland and Separated.
“Documented” Film Screening

In 2011, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas outed himself as an undocumented immigrant in the New York Times Magazine. Documented chronicles his journey from the Philippines to America as a child, his life as an immigration reform activist, and his reconnection with his mother after more than 20 years apart. Vargas will respond to Q&A after the film.
Immigrants Feed America Street Party
Location: Kieth’s Alley – Behind MAZU
An event of solidarity, connection, and celebration emphasizing the critical role of immigrants in American identity, culture, and cuisine. In addition to showcasing the new mural, the People Banner’s Workshop will host protest art making. Chat with Vargas, grab a bite from food trucks Lumpia Queen and Sushi Hikari, and enjoy sounds of Port-au-Prince from DJXOAD. Kids are welcome — chalk art and face painting available.
